Leading electric boating manufacturer Torqeedo presents new products that redefine electric mobility on the water at the world's largest water sports trade fair, boot Düsseldorf 2017.

The BMW i high-voltage battery has been adapted to work flawlessly and reliably with the Deep Blue system. This development means the very latest in automotive battery engineering is now available for boats equipped with Torqeedo’s 40 or 80 horsepower electric motor system.

With Torqeedo’s Cruise pod drives, electric motor systems are a viable alternative to inboard diesels. The heart of the system, awarded Overall Winner at the 2016 DAME Awards, is the Cruise FP motor, available in 5, 8 or 20 hp equivalents. It is complemented by lithium batteries, developed to work flawlessly with Torqeedo motors, together with new electronic throttles and a modern, state-of-the-art user interface on a high-resolution marine display.

The clean alternative to a small petrol outboard: Our most popular motor, the Travel 1003, is now available in the extra powerful Travel 1003 C version with 73% increased battery capacity – courtesy of its lightweight 6 kg, 915 Wh battery.

With the 25 kW Range Extender, Torqeedo introduces the first inverter generator capable of supplying electricity for yachts and supporting serial hybrid systems. The combustion engine always runs at its most efficient operating point and can supply the full 25 kW – regardless of fluctuating hotel load demands or the voltage level of the Deep Blue batteries.

“Along our entire product range, Torqeedo now offers compelling solutions for sailors from small sailing dinghies up to 80 ft luxury yachts.” explains CEO and Co-founder Dr. Christoph Ballin.

The 2017 new products at a glance

BMW i high voltage battery
Torqeedo brings the latest automotive battery technology to the water

BMW i3 high voltage batteries have made the very latest in automotive battery engineering available for boats equipped with Torqeedo Deep Blue systems. The benefits of the BMW i3 high voltage battery include a very high energy density, lower cost and industry-leading safety standards.

The prismatic cell design allows efficient cooling, a compact size, even temperature distribution within the battery – with an extremely rugged structure from automated production protecting the cells.

The fully automated module and battery production at BMW in Dingolfing has set the standard in high-precision and extremely robust battery modules. The very rugged design is ideal for boat applications that require superior shock resistance.

Integrated compressor cooling cools the battery to ensure high performance and a long service life even in high ambient and water temperatures. The BMW i high-voltage battery offers the highest level of currently available energy densities in particularly long-life, high-voltage batteries from industrial production – at a significantly lower cost per watt-hour.

Cruise Pod drives
The true alternative to inboard diesels

Torqeedo’s Cruise pod drives are a true alternative to inboard diesels. The motor unit, proven successful in thousands of outboards, is just one component of an integrated system that offers superior performance and convenience.

It is complemented by lithium batteries, developed to work flawlessly with Torqeedo motors, together with new electronic throttles and the modern, state-of-the-art user interface on high-resolution marine displays. The system can be charged from shore power, from solar and from a generator. It also creates its own energy, acting as a hydro-generator while under sail.

In the sailing world, discussions have been around for a while that the days of the classic diesel inboard might be coming to an end. “We believe, a few years from now, 2017 will be seen as a time when this process really started.” says Torqeedo CEO Dr. Christoph Ballin.

For the Cruise Pod motor system the German manufacturer was recognized as Overall Winner of the DAME Award 2016. The jury praised the Torqeedo Cruise FP for “its beautiful engineering and close attention to detail design, its integrated approach, its compact dimensions and its market realistic price” – creating exciting new opportunities for the interior design of sailing yachts by removing the need for a traditional engine compartment.

As a consequence, Hanse Yachts as of one the leading large-scale sailboat manufacturers is offering electric propulsion as standard equipment for the Cruiser sailing yacht Hanse 315 eMotion.

Travel 1003 C
Torqeedo’s most popular motor now available with 73% higher range

The popular Travel 1003 is now available in a version with longer range and run time, courtesy of its lightweight 6 kg, 915 Wh battery. The Torqeedo Travel 1003 C offers the same propulsive power as a 3 HP gasoline outboard, while the thrust performance is equivalent to a comparable 4 HP gasoline motor.

This higher capacity battery combined with the superior overall efficiency of the Travel motors means the Travel 1003 C can run for 18 nm (33 km) at a speed of 3 knots (5.5 km/h).

Like the smaller models, the Travel 1003 C, equipped with GPS, has a digital display that shows speed, power consumption, battery status and remaining range (time or distance). With the TorqTrac app, the user can display motor data on a Bluetooth smartphone, visualize his own position and set waypoints on a map. Available as accessories are handy travel bags for the motor and battery and afoldable solar panel for charging of the battery.

25 kW Range Extender
The first inverter generator for serial hybrid marine applications

Inverter generators available today provide only AC power and at relatively low power levels, so they are not suited to support serial hybrid systems.

The 25 kW Range Extender does not require a separate starter. This job is taken over by the electric motor included in the gen-set. This means less pollutant emission, less vibration and a longer life for the combustion engine. The 25 kW Range Extender was specifically designed to efficiently power the Deep Blue system and is fully integrated into the information and safety systems of Deep Blue Hybrid.
