A regal debut at the Regata Copa del Rey: the new ClubSwan 36 by Nautor’s Swan

T. Smallridge

Nautor’s Swan, Torqeedo, and BMW are pleased to announce that, after 2 intense months of sea trials, the ClubSwan 36 is in the water and available for viewing at the Regata Copa del Rey (King’s Cup Regatta) in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, until the 3rd of August.

The three companies worked together to create an innovative fossil fuel-free sailing experience for the high-performance one-design racer, which boasts a carbon rig, retractable bowsprit, and a transverse sliding C-foil.

Torqeedo developed a self-charging, inboard version of its proven Cruise 10.0 electric drive system as auxiliary propulsion for the ClubSwan 36. The highly efficient, 20 horsepower-equivalent electric drive is powered by Power 48-5000 lithium batteries with technology by BMW i. The propeller can be extended to function as a hydrogenator while sailing, producing electricity to charge the system’s batteries. When it’s time to race, the propeller is retracted for zero drag.

For the first time in history, ten all-female crews will compete in the regatta’s new Women’s Class, and His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain and His Majesty King Harald V of Norway will compete again for the 'crown' of the ClubSwan 50 class, making the Regata Copa del Rey a true “King’s Cup” and an event not to be missed.

Potential customers interested in trying the ClubSwan 36 during the Copa del Rey may contact clubswan36@nautorswan.com for an appointment.

Nautor’s Swan has more than half a century of experience in building performance sailing yachts, which are recognised the world over for the perfect combination of style, quality and performance. Exceptional sailing performance will always define any Swan and, while the more traditional Swan Yachts will retain the familiar element of cruising comfort along with their ability to compete when required, ClubSwan Yachts will be more distinct in their role and direction with the specific objective of leading the yard’s development of high-performance yachts based upon cutting-edge design principles.

2016 has been the Nautor’s Swan’s 50th anniversary: a momentous milestone that celebrates more than 2,000 yachts built over five decades, between 36 and 131 feet, and with the latest generation of Swan yachts like the Swan 120, the Swan 65, the Swan 78 and the outstanding ClubSwan 125 and ClubSwan 50.

Jewels in the crown of the ClubSwan calendar are the Rolex Swan Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (Porto Cervo) and the The Nations Trophy dedicated to the Swan One Design yachts (ClubSwan 36, ClubSwan 50, Swan 45, ClubSwan 42).
