Company

It is not unusual for a success story to start in a garage. This is ours.

A plot of land on Lake Starnberg. A wooden boat.
An electric outboard.

There are significant restrictions on operating combustion engines on Lake Starnberg. This led Gardena managers Dr Christoph Ballin and Dr Friedrich Böbel to looking into the question of electric boat propulsion. Instead of finding high-tech products and drive systems produced on an industrial scale, they discovered a market opportunity.

When they founded Torqeedo, concepts such as clean tech and electromobility had not yet been coined. But it was already obvious back in 2004 that electric motors would become increasingly important in the future due to global population growth, the growth of the middle classes around the world, limited oil reserves and efforts to limit global warming.

And since a good idea is also an obligation – the lack of competitive products on the one hand and the future significance of electric propulsion systems on the other gave rise to Torqeedo.

We create the future of how people move on the water

As pioneers in the field of water-based electromobility, we have set many standards since founding Torqeedo, reinforcing the lead of our motors over all other solutions available on the market.

Superior technology and revolutionary benefits are what we set out to achieve. And every product that Torqeedo brings to market meets both these criteria. All our drive systems operate at record levels with regard to overall efficiency, the most important measure of electric propulsion, as it determines potential power and range for a limited battery supply.

Torqeedo offers outboards and inboards, electric motors and hybrid drive systems ranging from 0,5 to 100 kW on motor level (up to 200 kW on system level). There are also all sorts of functional and innovative accessories – from lithium batteries and solar charging equipment to smartphone apps.

WE LOVE WATER – AND OUR JOB

OUR INNOVATIVE AND EMPATHETIC WORK CULTURE IS ONE OF OUR GREATEST ASSET TO DRIVE THE BOATING INDUSTRY FORWARD.

Torqeedo’s headquarters is located in the Alpine lake district near Munich – a landscape of clear waters, dark forests, iconic blue skies and mountains rising in the distance. On their way to work, Torqeedo employees see first hand what we aim to protect. Many of our engineers, designers, communication specialists, and technicians are sailors and boaters themselves, exploring the wild waters and mountains of Bavaria in their leisure time. In fact, Torqeedo sponsors a motorboat license for all its employees as one of our benefits. It's crucial that everyone at Torqeedo understands the needs and goals of our customers. And that we all experience the joy of moving across the water with a powerful motor while preserving and respecting the environment. This shared belief makes us strive to do the very best each day.

Our corporate values are derived from our brand essence, PLEASURE, POWER and RESPECT: Joy, Performance and Responsibility. What exactly do we mean by these? And how do we live these values?

It’s a great feeling to zip over the water with an electric motor – the instant acceleration, the power and silence. It’s also a great feeling to achieve your goals with valued co-workers. Embracing creativity and open dialogue, we collaborate trustingly with teammates, customers, and partners, both locally and globally. With a forward-thinking approach, we act with purpose, celebrating achievements and learning from setbacks. Every individual's contribution matters, forging us into a stronger, united team with a shared vision.

We set and chase ambitious goals, challenging one another to redefine what's possible on a daily basis. Our planning is clear, transparent, and grounded, ensuring efficient use of resources and optimal economic results. INTERVIEW WITH MARGRET REDLER, DIRECTOR CULTURE & CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT TORQEEDO

What do you need to bring with you to hit the ground running at Torqeedo?
We’ve defined a triad that expresses our Torqeedo culture: Pleasure, power, and respect. We’re looking for people who want to pitch in with us. People who are flexible and like dynamics. The areas of responsibility are varied and teamwork is our top priority. In size terms we’re no longer a classic startup, but we still have a supportive, family-like culture.

What exactly characterizes your working culture?
Here, everyone knows each other. Our production, development and management staff work in the same building, the distances are short, and the atmosphere is family-like. Here, you meet every day at the coffee machine and in the canteen. Development work is done in small, agile teams and there’s a plenty of scope for individual contributions.

MARGRET REDLER
is Torqeedo’s Director of Culture and Corporate Social Responsibility. She is a proven HR expert with broadly based experience in various industries. She loves to make corporate values tangible in everyday work life, enabling employees and management to strive for their very best: building up a strong team spirit and encouraging personal development.

Pleasure and power are important values for a manufacturer of electric motors, but where does respect come into play?
On the one hand, respect and responsibility for nature is part and parcel of our products and technologies. But responsibility is also key in our personal interactions. We’ve got an open mindset and always treat each other with respect. That diversity is a core value is also a matter of course for us. Last but not least, responsibility relates to a person’s attitude to work at Torqeedo. You have to enjoy defining processes yourself, and sometimes you also need the stamina to keep going if a development process ends up more difficult than expected. But in return, you’re very close to the product, proactively involved in shaping it, and experience its entire evolution from the idea to the final test. And by the way, that takes place right here on Lake Starnberg. Because that’s also part of the day-to-day work in many of our jobs – directly on a boat or on water.

Why is a proactively practiced corporate culture so important and such a high priority at Torqeedo?
Because a visible corporate culture strengthens the commitment, satisfaction, and not least the productivity of everyone in the company. A transparent and appreciative dialog makes it easier for everyone involved to achieve their goals. Numerous current studies on the impact of corporate culture also support this view. The bottom line is that employees want to make a difference – and want their contribution to be recognized.

THE MAKING OF A GAME CHANGER

TORQEEDO NOT ONLY BUILDS THE MOST ADVANCED ELECTRIC MOTORS. WE ALSO INVENTED THE MARKET FOR ELECTRIC MOBILITY ON THE WATER AND CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT FORWARD. THAT’S OUR LEGACY AND OUR FUTURE.

Like many modern tales of innovation, this story unfolds in a garage – or rather a boathouse by the shore of a lake in Bavaria, Germany. With the distant Alps rising through the sunset mist, two men are standing by a boathouse, reflecting on their day spent on the water with an electric motor. While it was enjoyable, they couldn't help but imagine a far better experience. In 2006, just eleven months later, the Torqeedo Travel made its debut at the world-famous Boot Düsseldorf trade fair. And the boating community instantly recognized the dawn of a new era.

From the start, Torqeedo’s founding team set new standards with powerful lithium-manganese batteries and 24 times more torque than competing motors. Our Cruise and Travel models were lighter, more efficient, more powerful, and much better-looking, combining superior technology with revolutionary benefits and environmental responsibility. Just months after the launch, the British magazine Yachting Monthly included the Travel in its list of the 100 best sailing products of all time.

NEW ENERGY FOR GERMAN ENGINEERING

In 2008, Torqeedo was named Start-up of the year in Germany. Torqeedo combined the speed of the start-up culture with legendary German engineering skills and precision. And soon launched subsidiaries in the United States and East Asia. The goal was never to just design electric motors for boats, but to transform the experience of boating, while reducing its environmental impact. The first motors had two horsepowers (HP); today we build powerful 200 kW systems and battery banks boasting high triple-digit kWh capacities. Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water – and it’s fair to say that it both created and grew the electric boating industry.

Times have changed since 2005. No one doubts that climate change is the most serious challenge of the 21st century. And no one doubts that electric mobility is the key technology to move towards a cleaner, healthier, and more livable world. Torqeedo is still at the forefront of innovation and design. The distinctive orange propellers of our propulsion systems can be spotted on motorboats, tenders, and sailing ships at marinas and harbors all over the world – from small outboards to the powerful 200 kW Deep Blue systems used on 30-meter-plus blue-water catamarans and autonomous ferries in urban areas.

In 2019, we sold our 100,000th electric motor. Now, we are at 250,000. Electric mobility has gained tremendous momentum in this decade. And Torqeedo, while growing, has not lost its pioneering spirit and hunger for what's new. We work tirelessly to adapt new advances in fuel cells or battery technology for maritime use and collaborate with OEMs and innovative companies to find the best solutions for every boat – and then scale things up. Our journey toward a electric future has just begun.
